BERTHA " CHIPPIE " HILL

    BERTHA HILL, nació en Charleston ( Carolina del Sur ) en 1905, Personaje de relieve en la Historia del Blues urbano desarrollado tras la emigración a las grandes ciudades . Viviendo dos grandes momentos mágicos en su carrera . Desde su ciudad natal se trasladó muy joven a New York ( Donde moriría en 1950 ) dentgro del contexto de este éxodo masivo y dramático de los negros hacia centros donde la supervivencia parecia más fácil , pero la vida de la metrópili resultaba tambien frustrante y Bertha tuvo que dedicarse a cantar el Blues , más por necesidad que por vocación . Sin embargo se dió cuenta de que tenía su propio público cuando debutó como bailarina y cantante en el Leroy's de Harlem , y después de uno de los muchos espectáculos de Ma Raney , la blues-singer que mejor había organizado su vida realizando vaudevilles con la que recorría los diferentes estados . Trás el impulso obtenido a la sombra del éxito de la gran Ma , Bertha fué contratada por King Oliver , con cuya orquesta cantó mucho tiempo en el Palladium Dance Hall .Tuvo sus primeras experiencias discográficas en 1926 con Richar M. Jones y sobre todo con Louis Armstrong , que estaba por aquellos entonces en uno de sus mejores  momentos y la acompañó en algunas grabaciones memorables. Por causas del azar más tarde cayó en el olvido de forma repentina quizá justificable por su propio carácter , reservado y modesto poco dado a las excentricidades de otras artistas . Veinte años después en 1946 fué redescubierta por el crítico Rudi Blesh , volviendo a surgir para ella oportunidades para grabar de nuevo , cosa que haría con el trompetista lee Collins y el baterista Baby Doods , recuperó bastante deprisa el terreno perdido tiempo atrás y volvío a actguar por todos los clubs de New York  , participando además al año siguiente en un festival celebrado en París , así como el homenaje a Bessie Smith celebrado en New York (Town Hall ) . Se recuerda de ella principalmente el tema Trouble in Mind por su calidez y estilo dentro del mas puro Blues Clásico. Podéis oirlo a continuación : 

                                 

Bertha and Louis and probably a few others that are well known. The musicians were mentioned but it is not known for sure if they are featured here. . Louis is definitely for sure here! hehe! 2 great folks just doing what they love and "Chippie" didnt do typical blues. She sang differently. But its just another chapter or another page in the story of the blues. Another great woman who did what she could and did it as well as she could....with LOUIS! ♥

She began her career as a dancer working with Ethel Waters in 1919. She was given the nickname "Chippie" because of her young age and her small size early in her career. During the late 1920's, she began performing with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels as a singer and dancer and toured with them on the Theatrical Owners Booking Association circuit throughout the south. Chippie also began recording in the mid 1920's, working with musicians such as Louis Armstrong. Chippie continued to record and perform in the New York City area during the early 1930's until the late 1940's. During this time, she established herself as a popular bluess and jazz singer with a powerful voice. Bertha Chippie Hill was hit by a car and killed in a hit and run accident in New York City in 1950. She was buried in Chicago, Illinois.
