Tony Joe White plays his classic song with the Foo Fighters on day three of their five-night stint.

Foo Fighters’ residency on The Late Show With David Letterman continued into its third day last night when the band invited swamp-rock legend Tony Joe White to sit in for a performance of White’s classic “Polk Salad Annie.” White functioned as the eye of the storm, remaining seated and cool while the Foos (with some assistance from the CBS Orchestra) handle themselves in a far groovier setting than they’re used to. Grohl even held his own on a few verses, dropping his guttural scream in favor of something closer to White’s drawl.

Foo Fighters also did something surprising and played one of their own songs at the behest of Letterman, who took some time to talk about the emotional connection he felt with the band, particularly after the birth of his song. After the band played a stirring rendition of their song “Miracle,” a visibly teary-eyed Letterman came to congratulate them. “You see what I mean?” Letterman said. “That’s pretty good!”
