LONESOME SUNDOWN ( II )

This is the archetype Lonesome Sundown slow blues. Opening with that repeated guitar phrase and with minimal accompaniment - only Talton Miller on piano plus drums probably played by Joe Hudson. It's enough to create the stark atmosphere that belonged only to Sundown of all the Excello artists. Brilliant.

Lonesome Sundown was, in some respects, the most atypical star of the swamp blues roster that Jay Miller built up in Crowley, Louisiana.. Whilst his slow recordings usually tended to follow the Lightnin' Slim model - this one is the most well known example - the fast ones did not necessarily adhere to the swamp pattern style which tended to look mainly towards Jimmy Reed. There was quite a variety with Texas flavoured guitar sometimes coming into play. Possibly his period of work backing Clifton Chenier with plenty of opportunities for travel gave him a wider musical view than some of his peers.

Title track from the LP "Bought Me A Ticket" released in 1976 on the Flyright record label.
