First feeling the power of music after hearing the sounds of such classic rock legends as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, it wasn't long before Jordan Patterson's parents purchased him a Fender Stratocaster to encourage his musical ambitions. Although showing aptitude for the instrument, it wasn't long before the budding musician realized that there simply were too many playing guitar in the crowded Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario, Canada music scene for him to make his mark. It was a chance gift from his sister of a Hohner harmonica, which he took to like a duck to water, which led him towards the musical path he was soon to undertake upon. Influenced by blues harp legends James Cotton, Paul Butterfield and Mark Wenner of the famed blues music stars, The Nighthawks, he soon immersed himself deep in the roots of the genre, while retaining a contemporary edge keeping in line with his relative young age.
It wasn't long before the teen-aged Patterson was making road trips throughout Ontario, Canada, even venturing across the border to frequent Buffalo, New York and Detroit, Michigan blues clubs such as the famed Soup Kitchen Saloon, where he first saw guitar blues legend Bobby Parker, whom later would take Patterson under his wing, mentoring him when Jordan moved to the Washington D.C. area several years later.
In 1996, Jordan released his debut album with the D.C. Hurricane, 'Give Me A Chance' on JSP Records. A solid offering, featuring guest performances from blues legends Bobby Rush and Bobby Parker, it garnered him critical acclaim and world-wide press from notable publications as Living Blues Magazine (USA), Blueprint Magazine (UK) All Music Guide (USA) Juke Joint Magazine (UK) and countless newspapers throughout the globe. Blueprint Magazine was especially enthusiastic about his live performance, exclaiming, "Blessed with a voice that many performers would die for, Patterson has the wit and personality that guarantee him success. This man is a class performer and a major star in the making". The album also earned him rotation on blues stations throughout the globe, including XM Radio, with Bill Wax, Program Director of B.B. King's Bluesville being an early supporter.
The success of his incendiary live performances soon led Jordan Patterson & The D.C. Hurricane to play a great majority of the premier festivals and clubs throughout North America, Scandinavia and Europe. Some of those prestigious festivals included The Tampa Bay Blues Festival (Where he stole the show in 1996), Canada's Tros Rivieres Blues Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival, the UK's Burnley National Blues Festival and The London Blues Festival, Helsinki, Finland's April Jazz Festival and many, many more. In addition to appearing at the aforementioned festivals, during his time in the U.K. Patterson and the D.C. Hurricane performed at famed London nightclubs Ronnie Scott's and the 100 Club, also having the amazing opportunity to record sessions for the BBC Musical Archives which were broadcast all throughout the European continent, amassing him many more fans in the process. Touring throughout North America and Europe also afforded Patterson to perform with some of the music industry's true legends, including James Brown, Barbara Morrison, Carlos Santana, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Mick Fleetwood, Robert Cray, Bobby Parker and Texas bluesman U.P. Wilson (with whom he also recorded the JSP Records released album “Whirlwind", subsequently touring Europe as a double bill in support of the release).
Then, in a blink of an eye it was over. While staring out of a hotel window in Ireland, Patterson made the fateful decision to pack it all in and go home. Burnt out from the rigors of constant touring, consisting of upwards of 250 shows a year, he returned home to Canada to resume a more normal existence, commencing a career in concert promotion and event management. After almost a decade and a half spent forging a fruitful, highly successful career behind the scenes in the management end of the Canadian music entertainment industry working for both private and public sector employers, including the City of Toronto and Concert Production Manager/Promoter Representative for House Of Blues Concerts Canada, Patterson has returned to his first love and passion - playing and singing the blues.
Currently recording demos with guitar ace Shawn Kellerman towards a projected 2013 album release date, it is a welcome return for this most galvanizing, exciting songwriter and performer to take his rightful spot as one of the leading practitioners of blues harp on the scene today.
