SAMMY PRICE ( III )

One O'Clock Jump Price Sammy Septet 1959

An amazing recording of several of my favourite jazz musicians. In 1977 I had a chance to play for two weeks next to Doc Cheatham, who came to Toronto as a featured guest of our Climax Jazz Band.
It was such a surprise to find this tune with Doc with an all American All Star Band playing in the Netherlands in 1959 for the VPRO Broadcasting Company. Doc would play his horn high up in the air. He told me it was to keep sufficient air reserve in his lungs and he considered it a healthy position as well.
A wonderful team of musicians is surrounding Doc. Pianist and leader Sammy Price sets the intro and after a few chorusses the band jumps onto One O'Clock Jump. On alto sax we hear Eddie Barefield, trombonists Elmer Crumley and another one of my favourites, J.C. Higgimbotham. In the rhythm group no other than J.C. Heard on drums with Jimmy Lewis on bass.
