Gwen "Gypsy Brick" Johnson, a retired jazz and blues studio singer, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, in Runnemede, NJ, at age 74. She was a resident of Runnemede and native of New Orleans.

Gwendolyn Johnson began singing at the age of four and was part of a musical family that performed at various venues in New Orleans. Don Robey, the owner of Peacock Records heard her when she was seventeen and recorded her in two sessions in Houston, TX. in 1952. Two years later she moved to the West Coast and recorded as a backup singer behind artists such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. In 1963 she signed with RCA under the name of Gwen Richard. She is the sister of Plas and Ray Johnson. Plas was one of the top tenor saxophonists on the West Coast and Ray, a pianist, made several recordings for labels such as Aladdin, DeLuxe and Mercury.
