PIANO " C " RED

   

           

         

Born James Wheeler, 14 September 1933, Montevallo, Alabama, USA. By day a cab driver, in the evenings James Wheeler transforms himself into Chicago boogie-woogie legend, Piano C. Red. His first yearnings to be involved in music were inspired by his mother, who sang spiritual songs around the house. He was tutored by a local piano player known as Fat Lilly, who was initially reluctant until Wheeler bribed him with moonshine whiskey. Wheeler moved to Chicago in 1956. He began his recording career with Chess Records in 1963, recording versions of "Slow Down And Cool It" and "Hundred And Two". He also shared a stage with many of the blues greats of the time, including Elmore James, Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim. However, like many of his ilk, he never enjoyed access to a full-time recording contract. By the 90s, when he finally began to achieve more than local acclaim, he had retired to performing only occasional sets at selected Chicago restaurants and cafés. Despite this, he and his Flat Foot Boogie Band consistently play engaging, Little Richard/Ray Charles-styled pop-blues well into the early hours. Among his best compositions is the autobiographical "Cab Drivin' Man", which was also the title of his debut album.

        

          

El pianista de Blues  James Wheeler, también conocido como Piano "C" Red  nació en Montevallo, Alabama, el 14 de septiembre de 1933. A la edad de doce años, Wheeler aprendió los fundamentos de blues y boogie-boogie piano y sólo cuatro años más tarde se trasladó A Atlanta, donde vivió y actuó durante la próxima década. Fue en Georgia que le dieron el nombre de "Red ", después del traje rojo que siempre llevaba en el escenario. El "C" (para Cecil, el segundo nombre de Wheeler) fue añadido para diferenciar a Wheeler de otro pianista de blues de Georgia que se llamaba Piano Red. Wheeler luego se trasladó a Chicago y ha vivido allí desde entonces. Se presentó con el legendario Count Basie Band en el High Chaparral de Chicago y apareció todas las noches en el Joe Chamble's Club en la calle 47.

Wheeler también era un habitual en la escena de blues de Maxwell Street, donde muchos artistas legendarios de blues tuvieron su comienzo. En los años 60 tempranos, Wheeler se con los grandes  tales como Elmore James, Eddie Taylor, Rogers de Jimmy, Hound Dog Taylor y Sonny Boy  Williams. Piano C. Red plays in a room at the Glencrest Nursing & Rehab Center in Chicago where he lives. Red who is best known as a Chicago blues musician is confined to a wheelchair after being paralyzed from a gunshot in 2006.

Wheeler was shot and paralyzed during a robbery at a gas station in Chicago on March 23, 2006. He passed away on June 3, 2013.
