BREYHS SWAN
Breyhs Swan - Bio
Born and Raised In 'Cudworth' a small mining village In Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England In 1958, left school at 16 with a C.S.E. 3 In art (c). Started work the following Monday as an apprentice engineer for Wilson and Longbottom, worked there about 5 years, got made redundant tried a few other engineering factories before getting a job at South Kirkby colliery working underground on the haulage for 11 years, redundant again and went back Into engineering working about 6 or 7 years for David Brown pumps as a center lathe turner, redundant once more, In and out of engineering for a few years, until I took a complete career move and started working with adults with challenging behaviors In Castleford West Yorkshire (Whitwood hall / House) Came over to America In 2004 and started work at the Palm Beach Habilitation Centre In Lake Worth, still there as a vocational Instructor/Art teacher, working with adults with disabilities (Downs syndrome, Autism, M.S, M.R, C.P. etc)
Whilst there someone saw a doodle I'd done on my desktop calendar and complimented me on It, so feeling cocky I went out and bought a desktop top calendar and a packet of sharpie pens from office depot, and In July of 2007 started painting a picture of Jimi Hendrix In the style of pointillism, finishing It In august of that year, this became the first picture I had painted since leaving school In 1974.
In the few years I've been painting, I've become a member of the Delray Art League, a signature artist for the Boca Raton museum of art, a member of the Broward art guild.
The first award I received was an honorable mention, In the Naples “Von Liebig museum of arts” bi annual International art competition, I have since received another eleven award ribbons, including 1st place in the “Delray Affair” and my latest ribbon was an “Award of distinction” at the 2016 “Sunfest fine arts.
When I started work at Wilson and Longbottom In '74' I used to see another guy from Cudworth on the bus each morning who happened to work at Wilson and Longbottom, (I spent the first year of employment as a full time student at collage studying engineering, only going Into work when the collage was closed and work wasn't, so not really getting to know who my work mates were) so never really made much contact with this guy, just a passing nod (we are very conservative In England) eventually got talking and he turned out to be Mick Wilson who worked In the Blacksmiths shop as a fettler, (Google It) In his spare time he painted pictures, eventually finding his niche with pointillism.
He has since turned out to be one of England's top pointillists, also a life long friend and drinking partner.
It was because of Mick Wilsons influence that I decided to start my art career in the style of “Pointillism” not with oils or water colours but with fine tipped marker pens (Sharpies, Micron and Prisma Color ) these pens being fine tipped made the process a long long procedure, plus also against traditional Pointillism instead of placing two different coloured dot side by side the give the impression of a different colour (place a red dot next to a yellow dot and see the colour orange) I layered my dots to give different shades and hues of different coloured dots creating different shades of new colours, this form of art became very time consuming (at times creating up tp 15 layers to get the right colour and shade) I was wanting to create art on a shorter time scale but also something that wasn’t traditional and a little out of the box, so I came up with “Scribbelism” which is exactly what it says, “on the box”, I create the images by simply scribbling in different coloured fine tipped marker pens to get the finished image.
I also do traditional portrait using coloured pencils, these I tend to do on black paper or foam board up to 3’ z 4’.
Another little arty thing I do is to bring the matting and frame into some my art work by customizing the frame to represent the subject, this is done by giving the frame a customized finish and embedding subtle and not so subtle images of the subjects past childhood images, to concert tickets to live photos etc
To be continued.
