Introducing the multi-talented North American artist, Janice Harrington, renowned singer of Blues,Jazz and Gospel, producer and actress. She resides in the quaint city of Lüneburg, Germany, with her German husband, the talented trombone player and piano-builder Werner Guertler.
Now, she is 78 years old, has 5 children, 21 grandchildren and 10 great grand children!
Ms. Harrington's (formerly known as Jan Dome) international career began in 1969 with tours for the USO to South East Asia, where she entertained USA military personnel during the Vietnam War. Throughout 1975 to 1977, she appeared at the Las Vegas Flamingo Hotel. Her acting credits include national tours of Norman Is That You?, Two Gentlemen From Verona. She was featured in the American television series Days Of Our Lives.
Ms. Harrington has worked with such artists as Billy Daniels, Lloyd Bridges, Frank Sinatra Jr., Sammy Davis Jr. and Lionel Hampton.
In 1982, Ms. Harrington was the opening act for Joan Armatrading in Oslo. In 1989, she performed with the Kenn Lending Blues Band as the opening act for B. B. King in Copenhagen. Special guest appearances include being on shows with Rockin Dopsie, Buddy Guy, Champion Jack Dupree and Luther Allison. In 1993, Ms. Harrington toured Switzerland with Big Jay McNeely . As a Jazz performer, Ms. Harrington has appeared with Nat Adderley, Papa Bue’s Royal Viking Jazzband , the Humphrey Lyttleton Band and the Dutch Swing College Band. Ms. Harrington has also appeared with the Danish Radio Big Band, the Oslo Radio Big Band, the German NDR Radio Big Band and the Ljubljana Radio Big Band. She has also been the opening act or guest soloist on numerous radio and TV productions.
In 1995, she produced the First North German Gospel and Spiritual Festival , with Gerhard Schröder as patron, who was the prime minister of Lower Saxony at that time.
She has written two musicals: Streets Of Harlem (produced in Oslo) and What My Eyes Have Seen (produced in Hamburg) and in cooperation with Karin Krog the Musical "Girl Talk" also produced in Oslo. She ranks her following appearances as being the highlights of her career to-date:
• Singing for Bishop Desmond Tutu in Oslo after he received the Nobel Peace Prize
• Guest soloist by special request of the American Ambassador to Poland, Mr. Hill, to sing for the First Anniversary in Memory of the Victims of 9/11
• Featured artist at the final event of Black History Month 2003 in the country of Georgia at the request of the American Ambassador Mr. Miles.
Ms. Harrington is renowned as an ambassador of music and culture, bringing her programs of Authentic American Music "Sing Out" to children around the world.
Organizing workshops and master classes in schools for children and students of all ages. School Workshops and perfoming round the world.
2007 also found Ms. Harrington in Bulgaria as a guest of the American Embassy performing in a series of Workshops and Concerts, also singing at the prestigious Bansko Jazz Festival as the opening act. Cultural Envoy, gospel/jazz/blues singer, Janice Harrington completed a highly successful program of performances, workshops and a series of master classes throughout Romania, from April 16-27, 2007.
2008 began with Ms. Harrington again being selected by the American State Department to perform in Israel for Black History Month, conducting Master Classes and Concerts, and was also invited to Thailand at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy.
2009 Ms. Harrington was back in Bulgaria, Latvia and Israel for Black History Month as the invited guest of the United States State Department. Traveling back to Israel this time as the guest of the American Consulate in Jerusalem, Janice and her team were invited to Palastine to make a series of workshops and concerts.
In the years 2010 to 2013, Ms. Harrington has been concentrating more on working with school children and people with disabilities, producing Authentic American Music Workshops (Sing Out) and concerts over Germany. She has also procduced the amazing Gospel Show The Roots Of Gospel And Spirituals. However, the highlight of 2013 was the 1st International Blues and Jazz Festival in Las Vegas 1st Iternational Jazz, Blues and Gospel Festival
2014 to 2017 Ms. Harrington and her musical partner Dylan Vaughn have been invited back to Bulgria Black History Month. Janice returned in 2015 for the Varna Summer International International Music Festival with Kalki Koceto and Stratsimir Pavlov and in 2016 as a special guest with The Ruse Big Band, Ruse Big Band Meets Janice Harrington.
2017 Now, Ms. Harrington (at the age of 75) has a passion for introducing the next generation of children to the Roots of Blues, Jazz and Gospel with her School Workshops (Sing Out) https://lueneburg-hanse.rotary.de/#clubnews-oberschule-neuhaus=20172018
2018 At the ripe young age of 76, Ms. Harrington is back with her updated version of "What My Eyes Have Seen", a show she wrote in 1989 produced in Hamburg to rave reviews and is her life story in music. See the link for video clips. My life story in music
2020 has been a difficult year. However, it has introduced us to the age of online teaching; a new and exciting experience with a great future!
Critically acclaimed in the international press, Ms. Harrington is described to be "as warm as sunshine". She definitely has the ability to hold an audience spellbound.
