Sweet Marta & Johnny BigStone Blues with real Iberian soul
When Arena Nord is transformed into a musical paradise in October, the audience will get a very special experience: The internationally renowned Sweet Marta & Johnny BigStone Band will be visiting Denmark, with strong Danish rhythmic support in the form of drummer Asmus Jensen and bassist Jakob Kortbæk .
Based in Barcelona, Sweet Marta & Johnny BigStone Band have established themselves as one of the most compelling acts on the Southern European blues scene. The band's signature sound is a tasty cocktail of West Coast swing, jump blues and traditional Chicago blues , which both respects the genre's roots and manages to deliver something fresh and vibrant.
At the front stands the charismatic Sweet Marta , one of Europe's only professional female harmonica players - and undoubtedly one of the most talented. With both finesse, power and deep musical understanding, she breathes life into every single track, and her playing clearly bears the mark of inspiration from names such as Little Walter , Rod Piazza , Kim Wilson and not least Big Mama Thornton - while her style is completely her own.
At her side we find Johnny BigStone , a guitarist and singer with deep roots in the blues tradition. His guitar playing elegantly balances between understated West Coast groove and raw, intense Texas blues, while his vocals bring soul and authenticity to the stage. BigStone (Juan Llorens) is not only technically skilled – he plays with a heart that beats for the real thing.
But it doesn't stop here - because during the concert at Blues Heaven, the duo will be joined by two of Denmark's absolute best rhythm section musicians :
Asmus Jensen , one of the most sought-after blues and roots drummers in Denmark, known from collaborations with, among others, Delta Blues Band, Earl Thomas, Ron Hacker, James Harman, and Mike Andersen. With his deep feeling, swing, and understated precision, he adds a rhythmic authority to the band that elevates the entire expression.
On bass is Jakob Kortbæk , who has established himself as a versatile and solid anchor in the Danish blues and soul scene in recent years. His groove is deeply rooted in both tradition and timing, and he manages to tie the sound together with great musicality and energy.
“We are really excited to come to Denmark and play at Blues Heaven. It is a festival we have wanted to be a part of for a long time, and we are looking forward to sharing our music with an audience that really knows and loves the blues,” says Sweet Marta. “Playing with Asmus and Jakob makes it even more exciting – they are musicians with great respect in the community, and we know it is going to swing,” adds Johnny BigStone.
Sweet Marta & Johnny BigStone Band have released three strong albums – Try It (2014), Come Love (2016) and In The Market (2020) – and have toured throughout Europe, playing festivals in France, Switzerland, Germany and Spain. Now it's finally Blues Heaven's turn.
The audience can expect a unique experience where Spanish passion meets Danish groove , and where harmonica, guitar and rhythm merge into a live experience full of intensity, joy and true blues.
