JO CARPENTER

Jo Carpenter was born in 1997. At the age of 8, she discovered all the records by Che & Ray and Fats Domino, igniting a passion that she wanted to turn into a profession from the very beginning

Jo began her piano lessons at the age of eight at a state music school, where, in addition to classical pieces, she always insisted on blues and boogie. Jo also had her first experiences with jazz with her first teacher.

During regular band workshops, Jo learned to read lead sheets, and she also began playing bass guitar and singing at these workshops. Today, in addition to the Jo Carpenter Trio and the Jo Carpenter Band, Jo is a regular member of the cult band Terry & the Hot Sox, the Swiss band The Alpine Blues Birds, and The 4 Troubles. She also performs regularly with the German groups Women in Boogie & Blues, Mrs. King & her Jewels, and the equally popular German band The Sazerac Swingers.

Jo has always struggled with reading music. She prefers to learn by ear and watch others play. To avoid being caught cheating at music school, Jo practices playing blindfolded, so she can see the sheet music in front of her under the watchful eye of her teacher.

At 15, Jo met Marcel Brunner (Piano Brothers), whose lessons were taught without sheet music. With him, she became more familiar with many old classics from the past, including Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, and Otis Spann, as well as more recent greats like Axel Zwingenberger, Vince Weber, Dave Ruosch, and many more.

At 16, Jo met her idol Ray Fein (Che&Ray), from whom she received occasional lessons. He took her on stage, paving the way for her career as a professional musician. During this time, Jo met many inspiring musicians who supported her as she embarked on her performing career. For example, Chris Conz invited Jo to his Boogie Night, and Martin Schmitt (Germany) welcomed her to his stage several times to train her improvisational playing.

At 17, Jo gave her first solo concert. In the same year, she recorded her first CD at Soundcheck Studio. Shortly afterward, she organized her first JoJoJam Boogie Night, with international guests.

Since 2014, Jo has performed in numerous countries on two continents so far.

Acting training:

Jo is not only artistically at home in music. She studies acting for theatre and film at a renowned school in Zurich
