Ollee Owens does not offer a sentimental appeal to simply “get along,” nor does she pretend there was once a past in which everyone stood together. Instead, she asks something braver: that we face the fear, greed and exclusion we have allowed to take root—and accept that none of us stands entirely outside the problem.

Drawing upon the elemental imagery of seed, soil, harvest and root, Owens transforms social division into a deeply personal call to examine what we are cultivating. In her hands, the reckoning does not become condemnation. Her voice carries the steadiness of someone who still believes we can return to one another without surrendering our unique identities or convictions.

“Common Ground” is both a warning and invitation: the distance has become too wide, life is too short, and it is time to find a better way.
